How will Character Mastery work?
Based on the screenshots and previous developer answers is appears Character Mastery will work something like this:
You'll move up the rewards track for each character by acquiring variants and splitting to Infinity level. You'll earn caches that contain special cosmetic backgrounds and flares. You will be able to equip those to all variants of that character, but only by itself. The effect will then be added to the potential split effects for that character. If you want to combine these flares and backgrounds you will need to unlock these combinations by Infinity splitting that card.

For example
If you unlock the Bubbles flare for your Jeff, you can immediately use that with any base background for any Jeff variant you have. However, if you want to use your Bubbles with a Gold background you will need to unlock that combination through splitting. Assuming this is the accurate functionality (it is unconfirmed), this would mean there will be some incredibly rare split combinations. Players are about to have truly unique collections, at least cosmetically.

The system sounds pretty fun and will give players a lot of new things to do in the game and new goals to chase, especially for end-game players. However, the initial shock of needing to split to get the combinations you want and their relative extreme rarity, may catch some players by surprise. There's still no information about rewards beyond flares and finishes like character-specific reaction sets, which I am still holding out hope for. Hopefully we get a thorough explainer for the system in January so players know what to expect.
Let me know what you think about the new reveals in the comments below! What characters are you looking forward to getting these new cosmetics for the most?
