No, seriously—I have nothing to talk about strategy-wise about this location. So instead, I’ll be doing something different this time around: I’ll talk about the lore of the location only. If you’re curious about the Pit of Exile in the Marvel Universe, let me tell you all about it. Grab your anti-tentacle spray, your most trustworthy mutant pal, and let’s go down the rabbit hole that is the Pit of Exile.

Krakoa and the Pit Of Exile

Located in Krakoa, the sentient, living island that became a safe haven and home for all mutantkind. The nation-state was led by the Quiet Council, a twelve-member ruling body composed of many of mutantkind’s most prominent leaders, including former villains like Apocalypse and Mister Sinister. The Council worked together to establish a unified nation for all mutantkind, guided by the Three Laws of Krakoa, the basis for krakoan society. Those rules were: Make More Mutants, Murder No Man, and Respect This Sacred Land.

The nation under the council flourished. The cooperation of all mutantkind gave way to dramatic new heights for their power. Through the combined efforts of five specific mutants, appropriately called “The Five”, resurrection was possible for all mutants. The nation of Krakoa could revive any mutant at the peak of their physical condition. With this drastic change to mortality, mutants started seeing death as part of their lives. X-Men Would frequently die in battle, only to be resurrected a few hours later without issue. Death became less of an end and more of a rite of passage.

Not everything was quick and easy as resurrection though. Charles Xavier had high hopes that a prison had no place in his new nation, that they all could live in peace. However, his optimistic vision was quickly challenged when they were faced with the first violation of Krakoa’s laws. Sabertooth, while on a mission for Krakoa, violently murdered humans, breaking one of their most sacred laws. Charles pondered what to do with Sabertooth. Execution would only bring the offender back and they couldn’t allow a criminal to roam free in banishment from Krakoa. The solution they found was to exile Sabretooth to the Pit, the deepest and darkest part of Krakoa, where he would be held in indefinite stasis.

Over time, the number of exiled mutants continued to grow. As it turned out, both Professor X and Magneto became increasingly comfortable with the quick and painless solution of simply throwing offenders into the Pit. However, they failed to consider the consequences of keeping someone connected to Krakoa for so long. Eventually, Sabretooth used his deep connection to the island to manifest a version of himself on the surface, crafting a body using the island itself as material.

He taught this nifty trick to his fellow exiles and together they made their escape with the help of some key mutants on the island that were unhappy with Sabertooth having so much control over Krakoa.

I’m not exactly sure what happened to Sabretooth after this little misadventure, but it’s safe to assume he rode off into the sunset on an awesome motorcycle. If you’re interested in the full story, check out Sabretooth Vol. 4.

The Pit of Exile still found its uses. Hope Summers, Emma Frost, Exodus, and Professor X decided to voluntarily self-exile after finding themselves threats to Krakoa as they could possibly be under the influence of Mister Sinister. Quite an honourable sacrifice for their nation but I’ll leave this story for another time.

Afterthoughts

Wow, what a journey we went through, huh? Hope you liked it; I had a lot of fun writing this piece. The Marvel universe is so rich and sometimes I just want to talk about it. I try reading some comics here and there but the vast amount of histories make it quite a daunting challenge to simply start.

So I might consider writing more articles like this to force myself to read some more and to share what I find with you guys. Let me know how you found this article, it was quite a departure from what I usually do. So, I’m extremely interested in what you guys think. Was it an interesting read? Did you find it fun? Did I get anything wrong? Let me know in the comments!
