New X-Men Developer Update: May 2025

May 02, 25

We’re heading back to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters with a brand-new set of X-Men. This new generation is living through the same teenage drama we're all so familiar with—but with a fresh set of impressive powers!

Season Pass Variants

Hope you like anime! Creative House Pocket is going all in with their heavily stylized, anime-inspired artwork. Their renditions will be featured throughout the season, including some new and returning favorites. On the season pass, you'll find stunning art of Rockslide rocking a red uniform, Wolfsbane menacingly in yellow, and Esme Cuckoo dressed in gold and blue.

On Reveal: Shuffle 2 Rocks into your opponent's deck.
On Reveal: +2 Power for each other card you have here.
On Reveal: Copy a card from your deck into your hand. Set its Cost to 3 and Power to 4.

Season Cards

With the end of the Spotlight system, every card this season will arrive via the Seasonal Series Snap Packs. I’ll list their debut dates with their intros. Esme Cuckoo, as the Season Pass card, is the exception—she’ll be available all month through the season pass and will only join the Snap Pack rotation after the season ends.

Esme Cuckoo
On Reveal: Copy a card from your deck into your hand. Set its Cost to 3 and Power to 4.

Just like her mother, Emma Frost, Esme is a powerful telepath, although I wonder which of the two is the least trustworthy.  She’ll arrive as a 3-Cost 4-Power card with the On-Reveal of copying one of the cards in your deck into your hand but the copy’s Cost is set to 3 and the Power to 4. Cards like Iron Man, Jubilee, and White Tiger could all shine with the statline Esme provides. Which cards do you think pair best with her? Could this be a Cerebro 4 redemption arc?

Surge
On Reveal: Give the top card of your deck -1 Cost and +1 Power. After you play it, repeat this ability.

Imagine my shock when I saw this card! Surge is a 2-Cost 2-Power card with the On-Reveal of granting the card on top of your deck -1 Cost and +1 Power, also, If you play the buffed card, repeat Surge’s effect. What a way to kickstart your deck! If you keep playing the “surged” card, you’ll stack up discounts and extra power fast. Is she simply a better Phastos? Surge hits Snap Packs on the 6th.

Prodigy
On Reveal: If this is in the back row, copy the text of the card in front of it.

Prodigy is a mutant with the unnerving ability to copy the skills and knowledge of those around him. On Snap, he is a 3-Cost and has 4-Power with the conditional On-Reveal copying the text of the card in front of him if he is played on the back row. It takes setup, but the payoff can be huge. Copying Moonstone with him can lead to some wild combos. Can you think of any clever strategies? Prodigy drops in Snap Packs on the 13th.

Elixir
On Reveal: One of your cards destroyed last turn gets revived here.

The Ultimate healer! This guy is capable of controlling life-force itself, not even death can stop him. Elixir is joining Snap as a 2-Cost 3-Power card with the On-Reveal of reviving in his location one of your cards that were destroyed last turn. It’s a time-sensitive effect, but he should work great with Misery and Firehair. Elixir joins the Snap Pack rotation on the 20th.

Xorn
After ANY 3 or 4-Cost card is played here, move it to another location.

He’s the real star of the show—literally. His head is an actual star. Xorn is a 2-Cost 3-Power card that pushes away to a random location any 3 or 4-Cost card that was played into his location. He’ll be a fantastic addition to move archetypes. I wonder if he’ll finally bring into the forefront our lovingly good bird, Redwing. Xorn will be available in Snap Packs on the 27th.

New Locations

Quite a hostile set of locations this time around.

After turn 5, all but your highest-Cost here are destroyed.
Cards with 10 or more Power can't be played here.

Pit of Exile is kinda boring and I don’t have much to say. Genosha Though! That’s a fun location that requires strategy and finesse in order to not lose much with the weekly Genosha destruction event.

Stay tuned for my Location Lowdown series where I tell you all about these new locations and the best ways to maneuver around all the treacherous stuff.

It's been a while since we had three albums in a single month! I love all the new art but my favorite is Rian’s cute take on the usually dreaded wolf that is Fenris. Something is up because Cobra is part of this album but we have no news on how to grab him. Maybe they changed plans. I’ll let you know if for some reason Rian’s Album doesn’t show up.

Conclusion

It’s a slimmer Dev Update this time around. With the bittersweet goodbye to Spotlight variants and no new game mode in sight, there's not much beyond the new cards to talk about. I’m most excited to try out Elixir—he’s just weird enough to be right up my alley. What about you? Which cards are you hyped for? Are the albums catching your eye? And how are you finding Snap Packs so far? Let me know in the comments!
