Snappy Review - New X-Men Season Cards

Cards/Decks

Pop Quiz! How many cards are coming this month? Answer: 5! We’re going from one of the largest Snap seasons to one of the smallest. If you don’t want to get schooled by the competition you are going to need to know what all the new students do. I’m here to help break it down, but I like my card evaluations like I like my Marvel Snap games. Fast. Snappy!

snappyreviewesme

Esme Cuckoo
On Reveal: Copy a card from your deck into your hand. Set its Cost to 3 and Power to 4.

This is so close to drawing a card sometimes it’s better!

Big cost reductions, huge power bonus and that’s all before we get to “created card” synergies.

The only thing holding her back from perfection is her statline.

If this card doesn’t make Victoria Hand decks meta, nothing will. Any hit in that deck is a great one, from the ongoing stuff like Iron Man to maybe getting another copy of Victoria herself. She’s also a plan B for Mister Negative decks, for if you can’t get your Negative down on turn 3, you now have another option to turn your big no power stuff into playable stuff.

snappyreviewsurge

Surge
On Reveal: Give the top card of your deck -1 Cost and +1 Power. After you play it, repeat this ability.

Low cost decks will love this!

Definitely the most hyped card of the season.

When she goes off it’ll be nice, but how often can you get that to happen without being stopped?

She’s got a lot more counters than initially expected. You can play Cosmo or Red Guardian into her after she’s been played and it will stop further repeats of her on reveal. I’m looking at using her in something like Ongoing Thanos, where any card will be likely to be played immediately and not held back for later breaking the chain. Bounce is another option, but how often is the -1 cost going to matter when everything is small or reduced by a Beast?

snappyreviewprodigy

Prodigy
On Reveal: If this is in the back row, copy the text of the card in front of it.

This is the one that’s got me thinking the most.

Can this be good? It’s got a lot going against it.

It’s going to be tough to get this in the exact spot you want it in, but when you do it can be very interesting.

My main issue with Prodigy is that he is too expensive for his ability. You need to get him in the back row and behind a specific card which often means playing multiple cards into the lane if not filling it up completely. This makes his 3 cost very bad for him. Now if he was a 2 cost it would be way more flexible. Since it’s such a task to get him to work, you want to copy stuff which will double up exponentially. Stuff like Iron Man or Moonstone or Captain Carter. You want to go big with this, not use it on something miniscule.

snappyreviewelixir

Elixir
On Reveal: One of your cards destroyed last turn gets revived here.

Look at how they massacred my boy!

A once very exciting Destroy piece, is now the worst card of the month.

Only being usable on a card destroyed last turn is massively restricting.

Since its only cards from the last turn, it turns it from being something you can use defensively into something you have to synergize with yourself. You can’t use it as protection against Shang Chi, because Shang is a turn 6 game closer. This notably does let you win Death’s Domain! What would I change about Elixir? There isn’t much saving him with this text in my opinion, but we could start with making him a better body to play. What if Elixir was a 2/5?

snappyreviewxorn

Xorn
After ANY 3 or 4-Cost card is played here, move it to another location.

We’re gonna have to do some cooking to make Xorn useable.

Along with new card Topaz, this is another card that gives you immediate moves.

Pairing him up with your own stuff is probably his best use, since relying on your opponent playing on him isn’t doing much

I see things like Redwing and Vulture getting more use than Scream stealing from opponent’s moves. It makes me wish Scream was every time something moved! Xorn doesn’t even stop 3 or 4 costs from moving into his lane later so it isn’t a very good counter card. This is also a nice on curve way to set up Hydra Stomper. If you can play multiple cards on Xorn per turn you can start to see how fast Hydra Stomper will scale. Combine that with Batroc and you can get some decent numbers.

So how did I do? Did I pass the exam? Hit me up on Twitter or down here in the comments and let me know below what your first thoughts are on the New X-Men! Be sure to come back every week and see our full articles where we go even more in depth into each new character!
