Cards/Decks

He’s Back—one of my favorite movie lines with some of the most hilarious delivery I’ve ever seen.

That’s all I’m thinking about this month with brand new Shang Chi coming to Marvel Snap.

Shang-Chi, Master of the Rings
Game Start: The Ten Rings starts in your hand. On Reveal: Unlock their potential.

What is interesting about Shang’s return to Snap as a new card is that this new design for the Master of the Rings works contrary to the original card design. Where the existing Shang Chi we all know and love (or hate) is focused on controlling power through destroying it, this new Master of the Rings is controlling the power by sharing it.

Shang Chi Master of the Rings does that with a generated 2-cost “Ten Rings” token that will occupy a spot in your opening hand (yes, that will affect your deck size and how you draw cards - I’ll come back to it).

This Ten Rings token has two forms, with its starting form having a single point of power and the ability to give power to a single card at a location as an On Reveal.

The Ten Rings
On Reveal: Give one of your other cards here +1 Power.
The Ten Rings Upgraded
End of Turn: Give your other cards here +1 Power.

These Ten Rings can have their potential “unlocked” if you draw and play the Master of the Rings himself. Unlocking the Rings' potential will give them an additional point of power and change the power-sharing ability to “End of Turn” and all cards at a location instead of a single card.

Suppose you achieve the perfect curve of 1-cost -> Ten Rings -> Master of the Rings, and keep at least the 1-cost card and Shang in the location with the Rings, that would amount to 9 power given out from the rings across the course of the game. If you were to commit a 4th card to that location on T4, it would increase to 12 power given out from the rings.

That’s not including the 2 power of the Rings themselves or the 5 power Shang carries.

19 power (that the other Shang can’t ruin that) by playing cards on curve isn’t a bad thing at all, the concern then becomes what is the rest of the deck, and how do you plan on winning a second location?

Synergies

Naturally, this is where we start to look at cards that will benefit from this given Ring Power. The cards that will do this the best are those that can “share” this power gained from the Rings with another location for a winning strategy.

The requirement to play the Master of the Rings on 3 at the earliest makes the 3 and 4 Cost slots most interesting to me. Cards like Human Torch First Steps and Danger are two cards that benefit from having more power. The issue with those choices is the limitation of the power to the location they are played in. Captain Carter, Sebastian Shaw, and Frankie Raye Nova have similar potential with limits to that one location. Realistically, with the rings unlocked, you should be generating enough power to scare your opponent off from that location, so I’m more interested in cards that can help you win a second.

Human Torch First Steps
End of Turn: +1 Power. Once per game, if your side here is full, double this card’s Power instead.
Danger
Activate: Destroy an enemy card here with less Power.
Captain Carter
Ongoing: Add this card's Power to your back-row cards here. (can't add to itself)
Sebastian Shaw
When this is Empowered, gain an additional +2 Power. (if in hand, in deck, or in play)
Nova Frankie Raye
After the next time you play a 6-Cost card, double this card's Power.

That second location necessity has me thinking of cards like Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Jeff, Sam Wilson and his Shield, Nocturne, or Rocket Raccoon and Groot. All cards that can take the power then redistribute it somewhere else. Keep in mind that by doing that, you will be losing the power in the Ring’s location by moving out. A card like Rocket and Groot could be the trick to un-incentivize your opponent from playing into the rings location, so moving out later won’t matter.

Kitty Pryde
When this returns to your hand, +1 Power. Returns at the start of each turn.
Jeff the Baby Land Shark
Moveable once. Nothing can stop you from moving or playing this to any location.
Sam Wilson Captain America
On Reveal: Add Cap's Shield to another location. Ongoing: Cap's Shield is Moveable.
Cap's Shield
Ongoing: This can't be destroyed. Give your Cap +2 Power when this moves to Cap's location.
Nocturne
Moveable once. When this moves, replace its location with a random new one.
Rocket and Groot
Moveable once. After your opponent plays a card here, steal 1 Power from it.

Alternatively, the cards that will share this power instead of just moving it (as we are seeing from Shou-Lau decks) are Maverick and Scarlet Spider. The Turn 4 play is what will be the genuine deciding factor of a Master of the Rings deck, what you do immediately after unlocking the Ring's power, and how to plan on using it to win a second.

Shou-Lao the Undying
On Reveal: Give the last character you played +2 Power for each turn you played 2 or more cards. (+0)
Maverick
Activate: Give the next card you play Power equal to this card’s Power.
Scarlet Spider
Activate: Add an exact clone of this to another location.

The two final cards that can take the Rings Power and use it elsewhere that I’m interested in exploring are Clea and Viv Vision.

Clea
When this is Empowered, add Flames of the Faltine to your hand. (if in hand or in play)
Viv Vision
At the start of each turn, give all cards in your hand +1 Power if you’re winning here. Otherwise, move this to another location.

Clea is simple, she is a 1-cost that will happily take the Rings' limited potential On Reveal power on T2 and will have extreme upside throughout the game with the Rings’ End of Turn Power.

Clea + Rings + Shang in one location will be 19 power by the end of the game, so use those Flames on the second location. A Zoo-style “Flames of the Rings” deck sounds interesting to me. Or you could take an approach to have an affliction-based deck with Diamondback.

Viv Vision is exciting to me as the Rings’ power makes it easy to keep winning her location, especially as they give their power at the end of the turn and Viv procs at the start of the turn. The shared buff synergy of the Rings and Viv Vision could build a fun, small-cost buff-based deck with cards like Sebastian Shaw, Brood, Mr Sinister, and even Clea. Or with both Shang and Viv being 3 cost, you start looking at Silver Surfer.

One last synergy mention of Superior Spider-Man as the Rings, even with their potential “locked,” the Rings give an easy way to meet that extra energy condition.

It might be surprising to some to see Wiccan excluded from this list of synergies. Shang Chi Master of the Rings, being a 3-Cost and generating a guaranteed 2-Cost in hand to fill your curve, makes the connection to Wiccan immediate. But the deck “fattening” is counterintuitive to Wiccan. The Rings are an additional created card beyond the 12 you start with in your deck, but they behave like Quicksilver, taking up a spot on your opening hand - increasing your deck size by 1 across each turn as you prevent yourself from drawing 1 more card from your deck.

Quicksilver
Starts in your opening hand.

If Shang's Rings replaced Domino in Wiccan decks, that deck “fattening” decreases your chances of seeing Wiccan by turn 4 by about 5%. Those decreased odds, combined with the Rings 2 power compared to Domino’s 4 and the Rings text being ancillary to the Wiccan deck’s winning gameplay - I foresee Shang Chi Master of the Rings fitting into Wiccan the same way Peni Parker did. People will move back to Domino or whatever else they were doing in a week.

Domino
You always draw this card on turn 2, and not before.
Wiccan
On Reveal: If you've spent all your Energy on previous turns, +2 Max Energy.

Before we take these synergy ideas to the deck building, it is essential to address the counters to The Master and his Rings that our opponents will be trying against us.

It is the usual culprits we are all sick of seeing. Shadow King to undo all that green power. The classic Shang, if you get too greedy with your Ring’s power, Deafening Chord/Red Guardian to eliminate the Rings from functioning, and by obligation, Ghost can do the same thing as the Rings are “End of Turn.”

Day 1 Decks to Try

A Shou and some Rings on Fire

Starting first with the most “expensive” build and the deck, I’m really looking forward to trying with Clea. It should make for an interesting combination of winning with significant points in 1 location and winning the second by taking down my opponent's points with Clea’s Flames, Lockheed, and Diamondback. I went back and forth on Marvel Boy over Adam Warlock, but felt Adam would work well with Lockheed to achieve his draws as this deck really wants to draw the Master of the Rings. Compared to Marvel Boy, who will only be here for a clear Adam felt like the better choice.

Ring of Threes

Next is the Silver Surfer build. This deck didn’t go the affliction direction, but you could combine the Clea strategy with a Diamondback + Hazmat Surfer deck. This deck is a more “honest” surfer build. Instead of using Sera for extra energy, we are using Hope and Kitty Pryde to give the deck some maneuverability of its power that a surfer deck typically lacks. I like the potential idea of leaving Silver Surfer's First Steps in the location with the rings to soak up power to make it easy to win that location on a final turn for a double Surfer pump.

Squatch-Chi(ing)

This last deck is the most thrown together, and no doubt will need a lot of adjustments, but it will be hard to know what is in need of cutting until I start to play it. The basic idea is a Sasquatch, Mockingbird Frankie Raye Nova deck. The rest of the pieces are what I will need to figure out as I play it. Maybe it’s some tech I’m missing, maybe additional buff methods like a Viv Vision over Bishop to play Nova late vs early. Maybe Dazzler should be swapped for Lockheed, and other adjustments will be made as I test the deck.

Variants

So is Shang Chi back?

That’s the big question: is the Master of the Rings going to shake up the meta?

It’s hard to know with Shou Lau, and now Fin Fang Foom hangs over the meta as the big dragons they are. New Shang’s power is much more “honest” or “fair” than those big cards, so it puts up a large task for the rings to compete.

Because of the current meta balance and the Rings' reliance on drawing Shang, the card feels a lot like Prowler. The design is interesting and full of potential, and the cool factor is off the charts, but like Prowler, when you take a closer look at what the card asks of you and what that requires of your deck, it becomes more challenging to achieve the cool payoff. Despite that, Prowler is a powerful card that surprises me every time I play him, but his application is much more narrow than I would have anticipated 2 months ago. I’m trying to learn my lesson from Prowler and lower my expectations for Shang, not because high expectations are fun, but to find the right deck instead.

If that can happen, Shang most definitely will be “back.”
